Recently a young woman came into my office distraught over the state of her life. She was dealing with the discovery that her husband had been unfaithful to her, she had significant health issues to address without the benefit of health insurance, and her financial situation was desperate. Somehow the scriptural encouragement to “count it all joy when you go through trials of many kinds”, (James 1:2 NIV), seemed inadequate.

Yet we can be certain that God’s Word is sufficient. The understanding of what it teaches, however, depends upon recognizing that God seeks to develop within us perspectives that have eternal value, and the development of these perspectives often occurs within the enduring of our most difficult circumstances. How then, within these challenging trials, am I to remain joyful?

The answer may be found in God’s command to “…be transformed by the renewing of your mind”, (Romans 12:2 NIV). It is not our circumstances which are the birthplace of our feelings. Our feelings are born in what we think or believe about our circumstances. Believing that God used trials at times to help him to mature in his faith enabled the apostle Paul to be content in any circumstance. That same understanding transformed despair into hope for the young woman in my office.

If you could build a house, but could put only four rooms in that house, those rooms would likely be a living room, a kitchen, a bathroom, and a bedroom. These four rooms serve essential functions in our lives by providing a place to live, a place of nourishment, a place of cleansing, and a place of rest.

As parents we must fulfill four similar functions within the lives of our children. We provide for them a place to “live” through establishing DISCIPLINE AND ORDER in the home. They are “nourished” through the process of being taught to build RELATIONSHIPS. As we relate to each other within our families we make mistakes, which our children can learn to “clean up” through effective COMMUNICATION. Most importantly, we provide for our children a place of “rest” through encouraging the strengthening of their FAITH AND HOPE within this often frightening world.

When built upon the foundation of God’s Word, the understanding of these four functions establishes a strong framework for productive parenting. “For no one can lay any foundation other than the one already laid, which is Jesus Christ” (1 Corinthians 3:11, NIV).

In 1501 a man named Michelangelo began work on a sculpture that would become one of his signature masterpieces. He began with a large block of white marble, which he carefully chipped away at and polished until the likeness of King David was complete. The masterpiece took about three years to complete.

Michelangelo could not have completed such a great work of art if at any point he had lost his vision of what the completed work would be. That vision was likely well-formed before his mallet was ever put to the chisel, and it guided the artist throughout the process of creation.

It is noteworthy that the block of white marble that Michelangelo used for the statue was not of the highest quality. It was weathered and porous, and there was a large fissure or crack in the stone. Yet the artist produced a masterpiece nonetheless.

God has a vision for each of us. While we are as yet unfinished works of his creative artistry, He will not lose that vision. We may be confident that He will complete the good work that he has begun in us (Philippians 3:11, NIV), and that whatever He has to work with, it will be made beautiful in His time, (Ecclesiastes 3:11, NIV).

Self-image is critical to the formation of self-esteem, and therefore to the way that we experience life and its challenges. Three verses of scripture, which may collectively be called the “workmanship verses”, provide an anchor for understanding who we are in relationship with God.

These verses include Ephesians 2:10, “For we are God’s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do” (NIV). Philippians 2:13 then says to each of us, “for it is God who works in you to will and to act according to his good purpose” (NIV), and Philippians 1:6 offers this wonderful promise, “…that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus” (NIV).

As a man who constantly struggles with my own flaws and weaknesses, I am encouraged daily, sometimes hourly, by the truths of these verses. They remind me that I am a work of God. I know that I am still a work in progress, but I may be confident that I am a work who will one day be made perfect in Christ. That is the foundation of my self-image.
